South West Communications Group has won a national industry award for its innovative apprenticeship scheme.

swcomms’ managing director Brian Lodge collected the award at last night’s Comms Business Awards held at the Royal Lancaster London.

This is the third award swcomms has won this year for its apprenticeship programme which has seen 16 members of staff attend Exeter College to study for an NVQ level 2/3 in a bespoke IT and communications qualification. swcomms has also taken on three school-leaver apprentices.

swcomms has already picked up awards at the Exeter Express & Echo Devon Live Business Awards and from Exeter College for this programme, which has been used as a flagship example of apprentice programmes of its type, showcased to other employers in the UK and overseas.

Mr Lodge said: “We have turned apprenticeships on their head! Not only do we look for young talent to nurture into future communications and ICT professionals, we have looked at our existing staff to upskill them for an ever-changing industry by giving the time to study for a formal qualification. Our staff can hone their skills while improving our customer service delivery to give us a competitive edge in a very congested market.”

The Exeter-headquartered communications and IT company was also highly commended and named as the runner-up in the Enterprise ICT Solution category for a software defined wide area network (SD-WAN) being rolled out for Mole Valley Farmers to link their 50-plus geographically-spread sites and 1,600 members of staff.

“We were pleased to attract recognition in this category too,” added Mr Lodge. “Mole Valley Farmers are long-term customers of ours and they use many of the services we provide with our data centre at the heart of their ever-evolving solution.

“What both award entries share is a dedication to customer service. Both aim to improve the customers’ experience through our own people and by using IT and communications technology to help our customers do the same.”
