Mayflower 400

be part of an historic year in Plymouth

On 16th September 1620 the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth to voyage to America, its passengers in search of a new life. They would go on to influence the future of the United States of America in ways they could never have imagined.

Next year will see the 400 year anniversary year of that historic voyage commemorated around the country. Plymouth will be centre stage when it kicks off at the back end of the year with Illuminate between 28 November and 1 December on the Waterfront.

Over 100 events in the city will form part of the Mayflower 400 year with music, theatre, dance and art combining to reflect the story of four nations – England, USA, The Netherlands and the Wampanoag who are all part of this historic moment.

From the starting point this year, the programme of activity will build towards the Public Commemoration Event next September with a major exhibition at The Box, Plymouth’s new cultural hub, opening in the spring, performances at Theatre Royal Plymouth, symphony orchestral works, hip hop and other dance alongside over 60 community cultural events and more.
